Please always check with your teacher if you're permitted to use Generative AI tools like Microsoft Copilot when working on assessments.
If you do use an AI tool like Copilot or Chat GPT, you must reference ALL uses of this and record the prompt you've used.
In-text citation (paraphrased) | In-text citation (paraphrased) |
When prompted with "how does the human eye work," Microsoft Copilot (2025) states that the human eye can be compared to a camera in the way it makes sense of visual information. | Microsoft Co-Pilot (2025, 6 June). Prompt: "How does the human eye work." |
Remember, if you're editing your own work using a GenAI tool, you also need to reference this. For example:
OpenAI. (2025). Rewritten by Copilot (Jun 6 version). [Large language model]. https://copilot.microsoft.com/
With this in mind, you should not be using GenAI to write or re-write assessments, this is not allowed.
More can be found on the APA Style blog here.
AI Art
AI Art should not be used in assessments because you cannot provide attribution of where the image has come from. You can use Copilot to generate an image while studying, but you cannot copy and communicate the image (i.e. download the image and upload it into an assessment in MyLearning).

GenAI tools should be approached with caution. Consider the following issues:
GenAI Checklist:
Are you permitted to use this in a subject /assessment?
Have you verified the information with a trustworthy external source?
Are you using the appropriate GenAI tool for this task?
Are you missing an opportunity to learn an important skill by using an AI tool?
Have you critically evaluated any bias in the AI output?
Have you correctly attributed and referenced any AI outputs in your assignment using your institute’s referencing guide?
When you ask Generative AI tools like Copilot a question, you need to be clear and specific in your prompt. It can be useful to ask GenAI tools to provide:
You can also clarify and change your original prompt if you need different or additional information.
Prompt example, "Give me a brief understanding in no more than 700 words about how the Australian hospitality industry accommodates dietary requirements into their processes. Give me sources of information that have been published within the last two years."
Remember, if you see a number at the end of the sentence in the response, this is a footnote showing you where the information has been sourced from. Make sure you check it! Consider using the CRAAP test to question and evaluate the information you've been given.
Copilot is included with Microsoft 365 for students. The Library can provide guidance on responsible use of Copilot and, we also have online sessions coming soon, which you'll be able to enroll yourself in if you want more information about the use of GenAI tools in education. You will also find the course 'AI for Students' on MyLearning.
