National Aborigines and Islanders Day Observance Committee (NAIDOC) Week is held annually during the first week of July in Australia. It recognises the culture and achievements of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples. The theme for 2024 was "Keep the Fire Burning! Blak, Loud and Proud."

In 1973, for the first time, Aboriginal people from across Australia directly elected members to the National Aboriginal Consultative Committee (NACC), a body set up to represent their interests to the Federal government, via the newly created Department of Aboriginal Affairs.
