Mental Health : Dept of Health and Human Services : Victorian government Most Victorians with mental health issues access mental health services through their general practitioner or primary care provider, but people who are seriously affected by their illness can be referred to the specialist mental health service system. Generally the impact or severity of the condition, rather than a specific diagnosis, triggers access to specialist mental health services. Specialist mental health services in Victoria are divided into two service delivery types: clinical and non-clinical. Clinical services focus on assessment and treatment of people with a mental illness. These services are called area mental health services and are managed by general health facilities, such as hospitals. Non-clinical services are called Mental Health Community Support Services (MHCSS). These focus on activities and programs that help people manage their own recovery and maximise their participation in community life. Both clinical and non-clinical services operate within geographically defined catchment areas.

Yet, 63% of these students have been found to experience diffi culties at school, while only some receive additional support 1. Meeting the needs of children with disabilities can be challenging for schools and families. However, effective support for children’s mental health and wellbeing involves efforts to meet the social, emotional and learning needs of all children.
Australia's mental health and physical health tracker: technical paper (August 2018) : Analysis & Policy Obervatory (APO) This report from the Australian Health Policy Collaboration (AHPC) at Victoria University is the first Australian study to quantify the risks of physical health conditions contributing to a wide range of mental health conditions including anxiety and depression. Australia’s Mental and Physical Health Tracker, is the latest report card in the Australia’s Health Tracker series, and reveals strong links between chronic physical ill health and mental ill health. Some revealing statistics from the report show: 1.075 million Australians are living with a mental health condition and a circulatory disease such as heart failure or hypertension – Australia’s biggest killer. 321,400 Australians are living with diabetes and a mental health condition. Almost 960,000 Australians have arthritis and a mental health condition.

American Journal On Intellectual & Developmental Disabilitie Linhorst, D. M., Loux, T. M., Dirks-Linhorst, P. p., & Riley, S. E. (2018). Characteristics and Outcomes of People With Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities Participating in a Mental Health Court. American Journal On Intellectual & Developmental Disabilities, 123(4), 359-370. This study compares characteristics and outcomes of 70 defendants with and 1,122 without intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD) participating in a mental health court. Demographic and clinical characteristics differed, but criminal justice or program characteristics did not. Age, race, marital status, living situation, court location, health insurance status, and likelihood of mental illness or substance abuse diagnosis differed between the two groups. When controlling for other factors, a diagnosis of IDD did not affect the odds of negative termination from the court but did reduce the odds of rearrest within 1 year of leaving the court. Some mental health courts exclude people with IDD; the study concludes inclusion is appropriate.
Crespo, M. M., Sims, J. M., & Ivins, B. (2018). "Scared All Her Life": Using Child-Parent Psychotherapy to Treat Anxiety in a Child With Neurodevelopmental Differences. Zero To Three, 38(6), 4-10. Young children with developmental delays, neurodevelopmental disorders, or other developmentally atypical presentations are increasingly referred to the mental health system of care because of symptoms that include prolonged tantrums, aggression, anxiety, and sensory processing difficulties. Concerning behaviors can be viewed as constitutional components of a neurodevelopmental disorder as well as symptoms of a mental health diagnosis. This article presents highlights from the treatment of a child dually diagnosed with autism and anxiety. Child-Parent Psychotherapy (CPP) and a traumaticstress framework were used to treat anxiety stemming from neurosensitivities, in combination with the integration of services for neurodevelopmental differences from other systems of care.
Hronis, A. A., Roberts, L., & Kneebone, I. (2018). Assessing the Confidence of Australian Mental Health Practitioners in Delivering Therapy to People With Intellectual Disability. Intellectual & Developmental Disabilities, 56(3), 202-211. Research supports the use of psychological therapies among people with mild to moderate intellectual disability (ID). One barrier to people with ID accessing psychological treatments is the confidence of mental health practitioners. This article explores the confidence of Australian clinicians in providing therapy to people with ID. One hundred and fifty-two psychologists and counselors in Australia completed a survey exploring self-reported confidence when working with clients who have ID and mental health difficulties. Clinicians were most confident with generic counseling skills, but less confident with elements of assessments and interventions. The use of treatment protocols was endorsed as helpful particularly among those with low confidence. This highlights the need for dissemination of treatment guides and training to help increase clinician confidence.
Crawford, N., Olds, A., Lisciandro, J., Et al (2018). Emotional labour demands in enabling education: A qualitative exploration of the unique challenges and protective factors. Student Success, 9(1), 23-33. Students in enabling programs bring richness, diversity, and complexity to the teaching and learning environment. They are often from under-represented backgrounds, have experienced educational disadvantage or disruption, belong to multiple equity groups, and face academic and non-academic challenges, including mental ill-health. This pilot study explored academic staff experiences in teaching and supporting students in enabling programs. Using a collaborative autoethnographical approach, four members of a multi-institutional research group wrote first-person reflections in response to guiding questions. From generative and reflective discussions, different themes arose. A major theme was the high 'emotional labour demands' of teaching a vulnerable cohort, with both positive and negative effects on staff. Other major themes included: the diversity of emotional responses and coping strategies; the complex, sometimes contradictory, role of the enabling educator; the importance of communities of care and support; and the impact of witnessing students' transformations. Within these themes, the challenges, rewards, and protective factors, which mitigate stress among enabling educators, were identified.
